On Wednesday December 14, 2016, Joseph of Pitcairn passed away peacefully after a four month health battle. Son of the late Joseph and Cecelia (McShane) Hayes. Beloved husband of Manilla (Sala) for 35 years. Loving father of Bibianna Goetz, of North Charleroi, Nadine Visnic, of Murrysville, and Jonelle (Michael) Hanawalt, of Greensburg. Loving Grandfather of Joshua and Breanna Goetz, Madeline Visnic, and Zachary and Samantha Hanawalt. Also survived by sister-in-law, Janet Hayes, of Castle Shannon and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by brothers Dennis and Thomas. Joe is a 1960 graduate of Donora High School and a 1969 graduate of California State College, California, PA. He served in the US Air Force from 1960-63. He was fluent in Russian, Spanish, and Italian. He worked at Thomas Jefferson High School as a Spanish and Russian teacher and for the US Internal Revenue Service. Joe’s quick wit, sense of humor, exuberant laugh, and gregarious nature will be greatly missed.
